La Jolla, CA | Private Residence | Design + Build

Perched on the western slope of Mt. Soledad in La Jolla, California, Casa Vista responds greatly to the incredible views of the town and the ocean. A remodel, the design uses an existing spatial layout and reinvents it to open and better embrace the views of the ocean and the interior courtyard, as well as create greater privacy from the densely packed hillside neighborhood.

The main living space is situated in-between the two main volumes of the house, one containing the kitchen and utilitarian elements, and the other containing the bedrooms and baths. Large patio sliders at either end disappear completely into the walls creating a unobstructed connection between the interior private courtyard and the ocean vista.

The building facade is re-clad with an African hardwood rain screen on the utilitarian volume and a Mexican volcanic stone rain screen on the bedroom volume. Corten rusted steel clads the new entry volume and frames the views from the front deck.
